Invitation Form

This letter seeks your permission to run the Australian National Chemistry Quiz within your school.

We cordially invite all students at your school to participate in The RACI Australian National Chemistry Quiz, which is to be held on the 22nd July 2010.

Invitations to participate in the Australian National Chemistry Quiz have been sent to every high school in Australia. This is the 29th year of the Quiz and it is now conducted in all Australian States and Territories, Papua New Guinea, Fiji, New Zealand, Western Samoa, Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Vietnam, the Philippines, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Brunei and India. This year 2009, the Quiz attracted 120,415 - 17,440 at the Junior 7 and 8 level, 43,935 at the Junior 9 and 10 level, and 36,926 at Year 11 and 22,393 at Year 12 level - from 1,460 schools. We hope there will be a continual expansion this year.

The aims of the Quiz are to promote and encourage an awareness of the nature and relevance of chemistry amongst secondary school students. The aims of the Quiz are clearly related to "Science for Everybody" which is a national aim for Science Education. This was one of the reasons for introducing a Junior Year 7 and 8 Quiz for the first time in 1989, and a separate Year 11 and 12 Senior paper in 1992.

It is hoped that such a Quiz will interest students in the further study of chemistry and will indicate to students the important role chemistry has to play in our society. Questions will be based on the fundamental aspects of chemistry as well as questions involving its application in modern society. The questions will be graded in terms of difficulty and it is expected that most students will be able to answer many of the questions. The Quiz will be held at two Junior levels (Years 7 and 8, and Years 9 and 10) and at two Senior levels, Years 11 and 12. By participating in the Quiz the students have the opportunity to improve their knowledge of chemistry.

Entries for Levels 7 and 8

We are aware of the lack of chemistry, as a subject, being taught in many junior science syllabi currently utilised at levels 7 and 8. However, we hope participation in this activity may stimulate these younger students to a realisation of the important role that chemistry plays in many of the fundamental processes which they encounter in their science course modules and in many aspects of everyday life. On completion of the Quiz, teachers may use it as a teaching tool, particularly if they spend time going through the answers to the questions.

Detailed Information

The Quiz will be held on Thursday 22 July 2010, and will require a time slot of 70-80 minutes. The actual duration of each division of the Quiz will be approximately one hour and will consist of 30 multiple choice questions. Answers will be recorded on a computer mark sense sheet. The marked sheets will be returned to the Australian National Chemistry Quiz.

Students entering the Quiz will be required to bring a lead pencil only (preferably 2B), not biros, felt tip pens or fountain pens, and a calculator if sitting for the Senior Quiz.

Students will not be penalised for incorrect answers.

If your school would like to participate in the Quiz, the school is required to nominate a School Quiz Co-ordinator who will:

  • Handle all communications with the Chairman, Australian National Chemistry Quiz.
  • Pass on the enclosed letter to the school principal seeking permission to run the Quiz within the school.
  • Publicise the Quiz within the school. Register and collect the entry fees of intending participants.
  • Be responsible for the organisation and conduct of the Quiz within the school, and subsequent return of the computer mark sense sheets to the Australian National Chemistry Quiz Chairman.

Entry Details

The entry fee for each participating student is $5.06 including the GST. Every effort is made to keep the entry fee as low as possible.

Each participant will receive a memento of his/her entry in the Quiz.

Entry numbers, not names, for each grade should be sent with the appropriate fees to PO Box 2129,Bathurst, NSW 2719 by Wednesday 5th May 2010.

Early registration, on the attached entry form, would be appreciated, but please note that entry forms and cheques must be in by Wednesday 5th May.

The ANCQ Committee regrets no refunds will be possible, and all registrations will be acknowledged and receipts issued within one month.

Periodic Tables (Wall Charts)

The RACI in conjunction with TIME LIFE will be producing a Periodic Table. The Periodic Tables can be purchased from Charles Fogliani at a cost of $13.20, including GST.

Quiz Results

It is the philosophy of the ANCQ Organising Committee that no monetary prizes will be awarded for outstanding performance in the Quiz. We do not view the Quiz as being in any way designed to find the best chemistry students.

However, Certificates of Merit consisting of High Distinction, Distinction and Credit will be awarded for each level of student in each State.

We anticipate 40% (approx.) of all students who attempt the Quiz within each State will receive a Certificate of Merit. A special Certificate of Excellence will be awarded to students who achieve the perfect score of 100%. This consists of a certificate and a plaque. An Award of Excellence consisting of a plaque will be awarded to the top 500 to 600 students.

All students will only be competing with students from the same level in the same State. Participation Certifications will be awarded to all students who enter the Quiz at the time of sitting the Quiz.

Past Papers

Copies of the Australian National Chemistry Quiz papers for the years 1986-2005 are available at $2.20 (including GST) per copy (this includes postage.) These papers are available to participating schools and can be ordered from C.L. Fogliani in the spaces provided on the entry form.

Note: The Organising Committee reserves all rights in issuing of certificates and no correspondence will be entered into.

I hope you will be able to permit the Quiz to be conducted in your school this year, and please feel free to contact me if you have any inquiries with regard to the Quiz.

Yours sincerely,
