Photocatalytic water splitting without adding water
Cameron Shearer, University of Adelaide
Hydrogen is a non-polluting and renewable fuel which can replace natural gas and oil. In this talk I will show how we have prepared photocatalysts for splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen. These reactions are completed in a custom-made gas phase reactor. A major issue in this field is the back-reaction of forming water from hydrogen and oxygen. By careful design of the catalyst system, the back-reaction is limited and hydrogen is produced even in high oxygen environments. High resolution TEM images with elemental mapping shows the catalyst design at the atomic scale. Finally, we show hydrogen production using air within the lab which is a proof of principle for creating hydrogen, a valuable fuel, simply from water vapour in the air.
