Welcome to the WA RACI Branch November Newsletter!

And so, this is my last letter as Branch President! The gorgeous, energetic and very capable Keelie Monroe will be taking up the reins at the AGM on 15 November. I am looking forward to the AGM looking back at the year we have had and what will be coming up in the year ahead. For those who may not be able to make it, a recording will be posted on the RACI WA Branch Chemaraderie play list on RACI YouTube Channel in due course.

The AGM will be followed by a talk from the CEO of the ChemCentre, Peter McCafferty. Peter has over 50 research publications, has co-authored a book and has represented ChemCentre at many state, national and international forums. He will take us on a journey using anecdotes on what sparked his curiosity for science and ignited a passion for chemistry. He will conclude with a view of the future and the research projects that will illustrate how WA has and will continue to punch above its weigh in Chemistry.

ChemCentre are a huge supporter of the WA Branch, assisting with many different aspects of the activities run by not only the Branch but our Groups as well. We are very grateful for the continued help, support and sponsorship.

I have to say, it has been great to see such a hive of activity from the various Groups of late. The Early Career Chemist Group did such a fantastic job with the Careers Night. It was so different this year with the employers having to compete for the fresh candidates. It really was great to see such vibrancy at the exceptionally well attended event.

It is fabulous to see two of our WA schools, Belmont City College and Rehoboth Christian College, represented in the 2022 Titration Competition Final leader board. Both schools achieved excellence with team scores less than 1000.

The talks from Neil Robinson on the many faces of NMR and Mat Deaves on ‘What makes Chemists the Best Occupational Hygienist’ were very informative, entertaining and with good opportunities for networking and pizza!

The technological advances on show during the tour of Intertek’s new Mineral Lab was inspirational. The spread of food was pretty awe inspiring too. I hope someone took a picture!

Please do come and join Ferdie and myself at the ChemCentre Open Day on Saturday 5 November. I fully recommend it as a family day out with the kids. Loads of activities to take part in.

The day after the AGM, on 16 November, the Analytical Chemistry Group will be holding the What’s New in Laboratory Instrumentation/ Expo 2022 (raci.org.au) as well as the Hackers Golf Day on 24 November.
Watch out too for a Retiree Lunch happening on 9 November.

Last but not least, I hope you will join the RACI Christmas Bash at Whiteman Park on Sunday 4 December 2022 for our end of year wind up.

It has been my honour to serve as WA Branch President for the last two year and I look forward to supporting Keelie over the next two years. Thanks for all your support during my Presidency. It would not have been the same without you.
