Championing Inclusion in Chemistry: International Day of Persons with Disabilities

By Hannah McCarthy posted 03-12-2025 09:11

Today, on the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, we pause to reflect on the importance of inclusion, accessibility, and representation across Chemistry and the broader STEM community. These are more than principles — they’re essential foundations for a future where innovation can truly flourish.

At the RACI, we are proud to continue this work through our RACI x Rebel Girls project, an initiative that highlights the stories of remarkable women in STEM, including trailblazers with disabilities whose contributions are reshaping our field. Their experiences, challenges, and achievements remind us that the strength of Chemistry, and stem more broadly, lies in the diversity of those who pursue it.

Our discipline has always been driven by curiosity, creativity, and the courage to push boundaries. But for too long, systemic barriers have prevented many talented people with disabilities from accessing the opportunities they deserve. By sharing these stories widely, and freely,  we aim to spark change, broaden understanding, and inspire young people with disabilities to see themselves as future chemists, innovators, and leaders in STEM.

To our RACI Members, we extend our heartfelt thanks. Your ongoing commitment to creating more inclusive classrooms, laboratories, workplaces, and communities continues to move Chemistry forward.

We invite you, again, to explore and share the project resources:
