Champion of Regulatory Science and Cross-Sector Leadership: David Lin’s Story
Overview
David Lin is an Assistant Director at the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA), where he applies over three decades of experience across academia, industry, and government to the regulation of agricultural and veterinary (agvet) chemicals. In his current role, he leads the chemistry assessment to support robust regulatory decision-making that protects public health and the environment, including chemical re-consideration, adverse event report program, and compliance investigation to ensure the public the agvet chemical products in the market continue to be safe and efficacious.
From Curiosity to Regulatory Science Leadership
David’s journey into chemistry began with a strong curiosity about the natural world. He completed his undergraduate studies in organic chemistry at Peking University before undertaking a PhD in Pharmacy at the University of Queensland. His doctoral research focused on the biotechnological production of plant-derived medicines, including improving yields of scopolamine from Duboisia species.
Career Across Academia, Industry, and Government
David has built a unique cross-sector career, working in pharmaceutical manufacturing, academia, and government. He spent over a decade in academia developing research programs in complementary and plant-based medicines, followed by roles at the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) and APVMA. He works closely with multidisciplinary teams to assess applications, peer-review scientific reports, and contribute to regulatory guidelines and legislative instruments.
Commitment to the Chemistry Community
A RACI member since 1991, David has contributed extensively through mentoring early career chemists, being a panel member for RACI’s accreditation of chemical science program to Australian Universities and participating in professional engagement. He is passionate about supporting early-career scientists and promoting chemistry’s role in regulatory decision-making.
Lifelong Learning and Leadership
David is a strong advocate for continuous learning. In addition to his PhD, he has completed several postgraduate qualifications in biotechnology, higher education, and leadership. He encourages emerging chemists to stay curious, keep learning, and contribute meaningfully to their organisations.
Looking Ahead: Advancing Regulatory Science
David is a strong proponent of regulatory science as a vital and evolving discipline. He is actively involved in initiatives to strengthen international collaboration, including Australia–China engagement in regulatory science and capacity building.
Beyond the Lab
Outside of work, David enjoys swimming, reading, cooking, gardening, and table tennis. He has maintained a daily swimming routine since 2003, which helps him stay energised and focused.
