THE CURIOUS CASE OF ACRYLOYL CHLORIDE - Is it a case of misinformation or misinterpretation of Safety Data Sheets?

Presenter
Ms Lisa Stevens
PhD Candidate - School of Medical and Health Sciences and Principal Health and Safety Consultant - Lisa J Stevens and Associates
Supervisors: Associate Professor Marcus Cattani, Professor Jacques Oosthuizen

Presentation
In 2022, a student suffered severe medical symptoms following exposure to the highly toxic and reactive compound acryloyl chloride. There have been two documented fatalities attributed to pulmonary oedema as a result of such exposure. Despite these significant hazards, the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) explicitly states that respiratory protection should be used "if exposure limits are exceeded or if irritation or other symptoms occur." In response to this incident, Lisa has undertaken research to determine whether the wording in the SDS for acryloyl chloride represents an error or a misinterpretation of the document. In this presentation, Lisa Stevens will share the findings from her comprehensive review of 13 safety data sheets for acryloyl chloride, emphasizing that not all safety data sheets are created equal.
