We invite all Retirees, Aspiring Retirees, would-be Retirees, anyone who is unemployed and workers who can get an hour or so off work on November 12th to attend a zoom meeting.
The next Retirees’ Virtual Lunch will be on Tuesday, November 12th (the second Tuesday in November instead of the normal first Tuesday) on zoom, starting at 12 noon.
Our guest speaker will be Dr Joel Hooper from Monash University.
Joel has recently been appointed Research Editor of “Chemistry in Australia”, taking over from A/Prof David Huang from the University of Adelaide who had been in the role for the past 9 or so years.
Joel is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Chemistry at Monash: the focus of his research group is organic synthesis and catalysis and the applications of these methods for synthesising bioactive small molecules, polymers and nanomaterials.
Joel has a PhD from the University of Melbourne, then spent 3 years as a postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Oxford before returning to Australia to take up his post at Monash University.
In addition to Joel’s scientific research, he has had extensive experience in science communication, having inter alia written numerous well-regarded articles for “Cosmos” magazine, and communicating science is what I have asked Joel to speak about at our meeting.
The title of Joel’s presentation for the Retirees’ meeting is: “The Art of Science Communication”.
I hope that as many people as possible will be able to attend the meeting on November 12th and listen to Joel’s ideas for the Research section of “Chemistry in Australia” moving forward.
Heads Up!
Looking further forward into the future, our last in-person meeting for the year will be on Tuesday, December 3rd, in the Bistro/Dining Room at Graduate House, starting at 12 noon. People planning to come, please register via the registration page here so that we can let Graduate House know numbers for catering purposes. I hope we will be able to have a good number to celebrate Christmas and the end of 2024.
