July 2025 NSW Branch Newsletter

NSW Newsletter, July 2025

President's Note:

We're officially over half of winter and the days are slowly getting longer.  I don't want to worry you, but Christmas is just 5 months away!

There is a lot happening over the coming months. For our Natural Products Chemists, the IUPAC 32nd ISCNP/12th ICOB conference is fast approaching. With a high calibre of distinguished speakers, this conference is definitely one not to miss!

I am also delighted to announce our 2025 Chemfest, which combines the President's Dinner and National Awards celebration, on 16th October. Spaces are very limited so keep an eye out for an email soon with details for registration. We have a terrific guest speaker lined up, Ross McFarland, AECOM's Chief Environmental Scientist, who will no doubt enthral us with his presentation.

As I write this message, I'm returning from Day 1 of Accreditation Matters, the conference e organised by NATA on conformity assessment. Sounds boring but it is absolutely not the case, and we have the pictures to prove it! I managed to extract some NSW Branch members for a special photo shoot, and snagged NATA's Past Chair to join us as an honorary Chemist! It was great fun and proves we don't all wear lab coats wherever we go. See if you can name our collective "Chemists of the Month".

Have an awesome August and make the most of the beautiful weather if you can (it will eventually arrive).

Best regards,

Maree Stuart

Did you attend the engaging and collaborative workshop designed exclusively for students in the RACI Physical Chemistry Division? We’d love to hear from you about how the event went, what your favourite parts were, and the new connections you’ve made. Drop us a message at raci-nswcmt@raci.org.au.

Date: Saturday 9 August, 2025

Time: 10.00 am – 3.00 pm

Venue: Redfern Community Centre, 29-53 Hugo Street, Redfern

Audience: Open to the general public

The formal opening of the day (10 am) will begin with a smoking ceremony and a Welcome to Country. This annual event showcases the rich scientific and cultural knowledges of Indigenous Australians, NISEP secondary student leaders, scientists and science outreach providers, who will be providing a wide range of hands-on Indigenous and Western science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) activities.

This event acts to increase public understanding and appreciation of STEM. NISEP, hosted by Macquarie University, uses STEM to place Indigenous secondary students in leadership roles at school, community, and university-based events. NISEP aims to give Indigenous students the confidence and motivation to finish school and pursue pathways to tertiary education and employment.

NISEP is a unique collective of Aboriginal Elders and community members, university staff and students, school staff and STEM organisations working to support the educational attainment of Indigenous youth in a meaningful way.

Please have a look at last year’s video to see a little of what we have to offer: https://youtu.be/OoFjanWgFLE

We will have a great range of new activities too.

The International Symposium on the Chemistry of Natural Products is the longest-running IUPAC conference.

The inaugural meeting of this series took place in Australia in 1960, and it featured no fewer than 5 Nobel prize winners: Alexander Todd, Robert Robinson, Robert Woodward, Derek Barton and John Cornforth.

It’s exciting to have this prestigious meeting return to Australia in 2025.

The 32nd IUPAC International Symposium on the Chemistry of Natural Products (ISCNP), held in conjunction with the 12th IUPAC International Congress on Biodiversity (ICOB), will bring together experts from around the world to discuss the latest developments in natural products research.

Scientific themes will include:

- Isolation & structure elucidation;

- Total synthesis & synthetic methodology;

- Biosynthesis;

- Synthetic biology;

- Chemical ecology;

- Biologically active molecules & medicinal chemistry;

- Informatics & artificial intelligence

The RACI NSW Natural Products Group Symposium 2025 will be proudly held in conjunction with this meeting.
