VCE Teachers Professional Learning Day

 You are invited to prepare for the new VCE Chemistry Study Design:

  • Hear from an expert in extracting, testing and analysing useful
    chemicals from marine and terrestrial resources, including native plants.
  • Test out some new laboratory investigations on extracting, separating,
    testing, and analysing chemicals such as Vitamin C and essential oils
    from plant material. Extraction techniques will include thin layer
    chromatography, hydrodistillation and coffee machine extraction.
  • Participate in analysis of the essential oil present in the distillate using
    the data obtained from NMR, FTIR and GC-MS instruments. These
    instruments may be viewed in an optional tour at the end of the day.
  • Learn how to conduct a volumetric analysis of the concentration of
    Vitamin C in a variety of native plants and investigations of the effect of
    changing experimental conditions.
  • Participate in a workshop unpacking the revised poster task with Maria
    James based evaluating student posters related to Vitamin C analysis.
  • Take home a booklet of all the experiments presented on the day.
    Copyright-free digital copies for your use at school will be emailed to
    you a few days later.
  • Network with other teachers - including sharing resources and ideas.
  • Gain accreditation for your professional learning.
