    Hi All

    Further to Daniel Turner's post to the Analytical and Environment Division I thought I would repost this here as part of the HSE Division Community.

    APVMA's Reconsiderations of Paraquat & Diquat

    Paraquat and diquat are non-selective herbicides that are used to control weeds in various agricultural, horticultural, and commercial situations. On 30 July 2024, the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) published its proposed decisions on the reconsiderations of paraquat and diquat.

    Technical Reports for both herbicides have also been published on the APVMA website: -

    https://www.apvma.gov.au/chemicals-and-products/chemical-review/listing/paraquat/paraquat-review-technical-report

    https://www.apvma.gov.au/chemicals-and-products/chemical-review/listing/diquat/diquat-review-technical-report

    Based on its evaluation of the information, the APVMA has proposed to: -
    • vary and affirm paraquat and diquat chemical product registrations and associated label approvals where at least one use pattern is proposed to be supported;
    • vary and affirm paraquat and diquat active constituent approvals to update the conditions of approval; and
    • cancel two diquat chemical product registrations and associated label approvals that do not meet the statutory safety, trade or labelling criteria.
    This proposed decision includes consideration of all current approved paraquat and diquat active constituents, registered chemical products, and approved labels.
    The APVMA has published a summary of risk assessment outcomes for paraquat and diquat uses-which indicates whether they are proposed to be supported or not-and refers to the underlying risk assessments for each compound within its respective Technical Report.

    Public consultation on the proposed decisions is open until 29 October 2024.

    REGARDS
    Lisa
    Acting Secretary - HSE Division
