    Hi Parijat

Lovely to see you on the community space!

Your comment about being an engineer but knowing nothing about engineering struck a chord with me. I was speaking with a client last week about the very same thing- he studied chemistry and biotech and had to complete a MEng to be able to be recognised for the work he does. So it seems to be a common thing.

Looking forward to seeing you at upcoming NSW Branch events!

It's great to see you in myRACI!

PFAS is such an interesting molecule/ group of molecules. It will certainly keep lots of chemists occupied for the foreseeable future!

As for the heavy weights, I know some of my third year Chem text books were pretty big and were the closest I got to lifting heavy weights at uni and for the next few years. At least until I had children, who seemed to get heavier by the day :-)

Looking forward to seeing you at future NSW Branch events.

    Hey Everyone!

I'm Sian, and I work alongside Robyn and Faith in the Events and Awards Team.

This July marks my one-year anniversary with RACI, and I love the variety of tasks my role offers.

Working with the National Office team is fantastic, and getting to know so many of our members and volunteers has been amazing.

I was born and mostly raised in Adelaide, though I spent 3 years in Perth as a child. I've been married for 10 years, and I have a 3-year-old son and a Westie.

I enjoy AM radio, cream in my coffee, and TV shows like Taskmaster and 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown. English humor is my favorite.

On that note, I am a first-generation Australian with a Scottish and English background.

Thanks for a great (almost) first year here.

Cheers to RACI and everyone who is involved!

I graduated UNSW about 1970 with Chem Hons and worked in several organisations while going through P/T.  I joined NSW DPI as an analyst and after a few years,  left the lab and took an interest in environmental chemistry that has stayed with me ever since: I'm currently working on P and Cd behaviour in soils.

    Hello Colleagues!,

I am Thiru, an early career chemist of food, nutrition, toxicology and metrology. I am in my fifth year of Ph.D. candidate and awaiting my thesis comments from Deakin University (Victoria), HDR examinations. I am currently working as a research fellow in our lab NuSea.Lab on a coral nutrition project in collaboration with AIMS, Queensland.

Fun facts - It was my young age aim to join RACI, ever since I attended the Australian Chemistry Quiz (1998) in Sri Lanka. I am a member since 2020, one of the first professional organization I joined after arriving in Australia. Other fun things I enjoy in my day today life are long drives, statistical programming and graphic desining. The former helps me to bring back balance to my mind and the later two activities help me to survive the modern day research ecosystems.

Nice meeting you all here and my best wishes for everything you do! :)

    Hi Everyone!

My name is Kylie and I am from the Adelaide branch.

I completed a Masters in Inorganic Synthetic Chemistry researching macrocyclic ligands in 2001 at Flinders University and over the next few years worked in pharmaceutical field with Servier International and as a large scale process chemist with Henkel within the car manufacturing industry at the GMH Holden plant, prior to becoming a stay at home mum. While at home, I opened a Wedding cake decorating business but there was always something missing....

I realised that my true passion was chemistry education, I was a demonstrator while studying and sharing my love for all things Chemistry was what I was missing in my career. I returned to studies at Adelaide University in 2018 and graduated with a MTeach (Secondary Chemistry/Biology). Since then I have been a Stage 1 and 2 Chemistry teacher and are teaching at Immanuel college here in SA, exciting and engaging students in this field (especially organic chemistry)- developing their love also!

I love creating things and renovating our house, old furniture and a 1975 Franklin caravan. I am a huge reading, movie watching, board game playing, science fiction nerd which I embrace with gusto and each Christmas my husband and 4 kids cover our house with Star Wars themed Christmas lights (similar to National lampoon's Christmas vacation) and dress up as Jedi raising funds for different communities such as the Starlight foundation.

I finished my PhD almost a year ago now and am working at UQ, doing a bit of analytical chemistry and playing around with glycosaminoglycans to bind proteins of interest. I'm a big fan of computer and board games, sci-fi and horror, and food (huge thanks to whoever brought those chicken sausages and lentil patties to the bbq yesterday), however my favourite thing to do right now is hang out with my brand new daughter, who has taken over all our free time for the time being.

I'm looking forward to getting to know everyone here better!

    Hi Everyone!

I'm Jenny Pham, the Communications/Marketing officer of the RACI. I work with all RACI business units to produce the RACI marketing plans and design collaterals. I also monitor the RACI social media channels and am the go-to person when you want something updated on the RACI website.

I have been with the RACI for 1.5 years now. Our team in the National Office and the RACI members have been so kind to me, and it is truly a great environment to deploy my innovative ideas and grow my career.

I am from Hanoi, Vietnam and moved to Australia when I was 14. I have been living in Melbourne ever since. When I am not working, I am learning Chinese, cleaning the house to de-stress, baking something nice, or going for a day hike. I love TV shows like Friends, Brooklyn-99 or The Good Place. Always sitting next to me listening in my meetings are my 3 pets: a cheeky Shiranian, a 7.5kg black domestic cat and an 8-week-old Toy Poodle. I cheer for Australia and Vietnam in the World Cups, and was influenced by my partner to become a fan of the glory, glory Man United.

Thank you to the members for always being very kind and helpful to me. Dedicated appreciation to the RACI National Office staff for always offering help and pitching in amazing ideas, evidently significant growth and progress were witnessed in the past year. Your support and feedback have helped me grow in the past 1.5 years.

May our upcoming 2025 be celebrated with bigger, better and "pizzazz-ier" campaigns.

    Nice to meet you!

I'm the NSW Branch President and I would like to warmly welcome you to the community. I encourage you to get involved - we have a couple of Groups which may be of interest, if you're not already involved.

I hope you have enjoyed being introduced to the piano. I would definitely recommend lessons. They will help hugely with technique and give you some exercises so you become more dextrous on the keyboard. Sadly, I rarely get time to play so my technique has suffered. But my good friend from school who is a piano teacher tells me that it's just a matter of practice and exercises and I will return to my Year 12 skills level. That seems like a dream right now- work and RACI gets in the way of this.

Hope to see you at an upcoming event.

    Kind regards

    Hi everyone

    1. I am from the QLD branch
    2. For most of my time in university I have been fascinated by the fields at the interface between Chemistry and Biology, and in particular I have developed a strong fascination for peptide chemistry and the world of venoms and toxins.
    3. I have recently started my PhD, investigating potential novel BBB peptide shuttles, eventually exploring animal venoms for new leads in this regard. Pretty much the perfect project to combine all of the fields that I am passionate about!
    4. I love team sports, I am currently playing pickup basketball on a regular basis and playing in a flag (American) football amateur league. I also deeply love board games, and I play the piano (haven't played in quite a while unfortunately) and did write a few pieces myself.

    Hi everyone,

answers to the questions as follows :

    1) South Australia

    2) I work in the waste industry in South Australia as an industrial chemist I guess you could call it. I also work as an analytical chemist for the same company.

    3) I don't really have a favourite project other than finding a way to safely remove aluminium oxide from my telescope mirror (see separate thread).

    4) My interests include astronomy, birdwatching, travelling and pretty well anything to do with nature.

I joined the RACI 40 years ago when I was studying chemistry after having decided chemical engineering wasn't for me.

    Hi all,

I have joined RACI for a couple of years but haven't really got the chance to interact with the community. Here is a start :)

    1. Which branch are you from?

A: I base in Sydney, NSW.

    2. What are you passionate about within the field of chemistry?

A: I enjoy organic chemistry and polymer science. Lately, I am focusing on formulation chemistry and translating research projects into industry opportunities. My ultimate goal is to use the most sustainable practices and simplest processes in developing a well-performing product.

    3. Do you have any favourite projects or research topics you're currently working on?

A: I am currently helping a start-up to develop and launch products for flame retardant applications. Some of these are already on the shelves. What I learnt from the process is that product development is not just fun and games. There are multiple aspects to be considered and required various support. This would be challenging for most start-up who may not have the experience and resources to cover everything. I would really like to help bridging this knowledge gap with my network.

    4. Any fun facts or hobbies you'd like to share with the community?

A: It's not science related, but I am learning skateboarding in my 30's :P

I am setting my goal to be a more active member this year so hope to meet you in person one day.

    Hi Ka Wai

Great to see you on this forum! Congratulations of making some successful products. Working in the start-up world is tough and there is no way one person has all the skills to navigate through to a successful launch.

I am the NSW Branch President and I encourage you to get involved with one of our special interest groups. We've got a few to choose from that might cover your areas of interest. Please feel free to reach out at raci-nswcmt@raci.org.au and I can help make the introductions. You just might find someone to work with in seeing your ideas come to fruition. There are lots of RACI members with skills in IP, business and commercialisation.

Looking forward to seeing you in the future!

    Kind regards
