An exploration of the Aluminium Industry's pivotal role in Western Australia.

Aluminium is a lightweight, corrosion-resistant and infinitely recyclable material. It is used in multiple industries including construction, transport, electrical equipment, machinery and packaging and is a key enabler of clean energy technologies. Recycled Aluminium can be carbon neutral if powered by renewable electricity. However, with demand expected to grow by 80% by 2050 as we transition toward net zero, recycled aluminium alone will not be enough. With WA being the largest global producer and 2nd largest exporter of bauxite; the 2nd largest producer of alumina and ranking 7th in primary aluminium production we are all set! Let the good times roll......But hey, why are we closing the aluminium refinery in Kwinana? What’s the issue?

Australia is ranked 7th globally as electricity significantly impacts smelters cost base and competitiveness. Converting Alumina to Aluminium is a massively energy-intensive process uses approximately 10% of the country’s electricity and creates 6.5% of Australia's Greenhouse gas emissions from the generation of the electricity itself. So, what are we doing about it?

Are there other hidden issues for WA in being the global supplier of Aluminum.....?
The Royal Australian Chemical Institutes' Western Australian Industry Group is thrilled to announce the upcoming event exploring the Aluminium Industry's pivotal role in Western Australia and its contributions towards achieving a net-zero.

The event will feature a panel of esteemed speakers from various sectors, including aluminium production, decarbonisation, waste management, recycling, and environmental advocacy. Each will deliver a succinct 10-minute presentation, designed to provide a holistic view of the industry's advancements in sustainability and technological innovation.

In addition to the talks, interactive stalls hosted by the speakers will offer a unique opportunity for in-depth discussions on specialized topics. This gathering is not only an excellent occasion for professional networking but also a chance to exchange ideas and insights within our community.
